Vegan Lentils and Sweet Potatoes Burger

Few years ago as most people, I thought, that vegan diet lacks variety and I could never go vegan (or even vegetarian), but as I became vegan, it's like everyday I find and make something new, something unbelievably delicious.

First time I made burgers with soy flakes and it was perfect, but today I want to share with you this unique recipe of black lentils and sweet potatoes burger. Also I created really delicious tomato sauce, whole burger was just gorgeous.

Ingredients for burger:

Burger buns
Lentils and Sweet potatoes burger
Hot BBQ sauce

Black lentils and sweet potatoes burger ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup of black lentils
  • 1/2 sweet potato
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese spices
  • 1/2 tsp Chicken - Curry spices
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 small red onion
(The spice blends were as follows: chili pepper, allspice, onion, garlic, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, black pepper, cloves, thyme, unrefined sugar)


  1. Wash Black lentils with water and soak them with water over night.
  2. Peel Sweet potato and cut into small cubes. Finely chopp or grate carrot.
  3. Wash soaked lentils with water. Start to boil lentils, carrots and sweet potatoes. Pour some water on them, so it covers the bottom of the pot and let it boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes until lentils are cooked and you can easily mash potatoes with fork.
  4. If there is some water left, pour it off. Add spices, salt and mash or blend everything. Add chopped onion, garlic and mix everything. 
  5. Shape cutlets with your hands. It should be about 4-5 cutlets.
  6. Put them on a baking tray with baking paper. Spread a little bit of oil on top and cook for 15min on 350F, then flip, again spread some oil on top and bake for another 15minutes.
  7. When it's few minutes left until burgers are done, you can place burger buns into the oven to warm them up and make crispy.

Hot BBQ Sauce

2 cloves of garlic
1 tbsp oil for frying
1/4 tsp Chinese spices (most important: red bell pepper and chili pepper)
1/2 tsp chicken curry
1/2 tsp (white) mustard seeds
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp BBQ sauce
5 tbsp natural tomato sauce

Heat the oil in the pan, add spices, mustard seeds and garlic, cook for 20 seconds and pour the water. When the water starts to boil add BBQ and tomato sauce, mix well and cook on a low heat for couple more minutes.

We ate burgers with oven baked potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes. And it's very delicious with salad.
